Effra residents can learn Tai Chi direct from one of its expert “disciples” without even having to leave the area, by going along to Brixton Community Base on Thursday evenings from 7.30 to 9pm for a session with Neville Côté.
Mr Côté was accepted as a disciple into the Wu family style of tai chi chuan in 2009 by the head of the Wu family, Grandmaster Eddie Wu Kwong Yu, who in turn is a 5th generation direct descendent of the founder of this style of the tai chi martial arts.
Mr Cote is from Streatham but his favourite pub is the Effra, and he has friends in Talma Road, so we are prepared to adopt him as an honorary Effra-ite. Talking exclusively to Effrablog, he said:
“I want to enable people of all ages and abilities to have the opportunity to utilise Tai Chi Chuan’s immense health benefits, whether it’s the professional athlete using it as an ancillary exercise, or the elderly person looking to increase joint mobilisation and balance, and for those inclined its profound self-defence aspects.
“I would like to teach people from all sections of our community and I’m currently working on adapting the syllabus towards children with the help of some fellow instructors who have experience of running kids classes. I teach all walks of life, from young to old, experienced martial artists to absolute beginners, busy career people and people with neurological disabilities.”
The drop-in fee for a class is £10, or £30 per calendar month. Follow this link for more information.
