The Baytree centre on Brixton Road has got in touch to ask that we let people in our area know about their new free, part-time classes for 16-18 year old girls. The subjects are:
Introduction to Hair and Beauty,
Employability & Personal Effectiveness,
All of them run for 10 or 12 weeks, and are accredited. The organiser, Kate Haggerty, writes: “Baytree is a small, friendly place – a great environment for a first step (back) into education or training. We are recruiting NOW, so if you know anyone who might be interested, please ask them to get in touch with me on 0207 733 5283 or enquiries[at]baytreecentre.org.uk “
Community Freshview is a Lambeth council initiative to brighten up local streets, for example by organising clean-ups, bulb planting, fence painting etc. They have supported local residents to improve the streets in our area a few times in the last few years. Now they want to hear what your priorities are. They will be knocking on doors in Rattray and Kellett Roads on Saturday 29th December, as well as being available between 9.30-11am outside the Effra pub, in order to talk to residents about what improvements might be useful, with a view to arranging a time to do the work that people want perhaps in the spring.
If you have a view as to something that could be done then you can also let them know by commenting on this story below.
Lambeth council are also going to resurface Rattray and Kellett Roads early next year as part of the same initiative.
Thanks to the generosity of Friends of Windmill Gardens the following bulbs are available to be planted around Windrush Square tree line by Saltoun Road:
Narcissus – Pseudonarcissus (big daffs) (250)
Muscari armeniacum (Grape Hyacinth) (160)
Canaliculatus narcissi (little daffs) (250)
Nivali Flore Pleno Galantus (snowdrops) (60)
There are 14 trees along the square’s southern border so we should be able to plant app 50 bulbs around each tree, enough to make a ring of 10 clusters. This promises a lovely display to brighten the square in the spring.
The times are: Thursday 20 December from 2pm onwards; and Saturday 22 December from 10am onwards
If you have gloves and handtools it would be helpful if you would bring them with you.
Effrablog neighbours are welcome to come along to the Brixton Community Base and Friends of Brockwell Park joint Christmas Celebration 2012 on Saturday 15th December, from 8pm to 1am at Brixton Community Base Talma Road, London SW2 1AS. Might be a good way to warm up if you’ve just done the Lido Midwinter Swim.
Entry is free but please bring a dish to share, a bottle (or two) and cash for the (apparently “amazing” raffle) – there will also be a limited bar available on the night.
The organisers – Caroline, David, Louise, Matt, Michael, & Rich – say: “Come along to enjoy the cool sounds of the Roger Humbles Band and meet friends old and new at our annual get together. We very much hope you’ll be able to join us as we celebrate another great year at Brixton Community Base and look forward to 2013″
